During the economic crisis that hit the world recently, there was a lot of businesses that were affected and many had to close shop. The tourism industry especially in Africa bore the brunt considering the fact that the cost of flights to most African destinations is rather high. Uganda was no exception with some tour operators having to layoff some of their staff and others were left on the brink of closure. The situation is however changing in Uganda, the number of tourists visiting the Country is increasing with the improvement in the economic situation in many of the Countries around the world. The projection by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) looks like it is going to come to pass as there has been an increased number of tourists visiting the Country especially after the year 2009 was named as the "YEAR OF THE GORILLA". It saw many renown Hollywood celebrities visiting the Country as part of a campaign which saw the Uganda Wildlife Authority launch the "Friend A Gorilla" campaign in which Hollywood celebrities helped in launching virtual tracking / trekking of mountain gorillas in the wild through popular social networking sites like Facebook and Tweeter. The different tourism initiates of the year 2009 have finally began to bear fruit and the great publicity from the different projects as well as that of local tour operators to market Uganda as a great tourism destination is finally beginning to pay off. Uganda safari companies are beginning to see an increase in the number of tourists coming in from different tourism destinations including Asia which once had very few tourists coming to Uganda and Africa as a whole. | |
