The Masai Mara national parks is probably one of the most documented conservation areas in the world. It derives its name from the Mara river that runs through it and the Masai people where it is located. The Masai are people with a distinct culture who live side by side with the animals in the conservation area. A Masai Mara tour will most definitely involve watching the wildebeest which is the one of the main attractions in the region. Every year millions of Wildebeest migrate to and from the Masai Mara national park to the Serengeti national park in Tanzania. This is probably the most spectacular wildlife show on earth as mega-herds of over 1.5 million wildebeest accompanied by over 200,000 Zebras and various numbers of gazelle move from one conservation area to another in search of fresh grass for food and water. The Masai Mara and Serengeti are part of an ecosystem the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem which stretches from northern Tanzania to the south of Kenya. These two packages have feature prominently in most Tanzania and Kenya safari tour itineraries. The vast plains of the Masai Mara and Serengeti national park provides a good place for these herbivores and a large number of predators who prey on them. Every year, from birth a the wildebeest migrate from one conservation area to another in search of fresh grass and water brought on by the rains. During these migratory movements, the wildebeest and Zebra run through gauntlets of predators like lions, cheetahs, leopards, wild dogs and crocodiles lurking in the murky waters that make up the Mara river. - Tanzania safari I will be featuring some the routes that these mega-herds take in a latter article. | |
