7:46 AM East Africa Tourism Suffers Setbacks | |
The killing of a British tourist in Kenya and the kidnapping of his wife by supposedly Al Shabab militants has once again scared off a couple of tourists. Many tourists were calling and asking their Kenya travel agency whether it is safe to visit magical Kenya. In the space of a couple of days after that unfortunate event, there was a huge fire incident that killed over 100 people in the capital Nairobi. All these things have affected tourism in Kenya is one way or another. A Masai Mara safari is probably East Africa's most sought-after safari package and this is closely followed by a Serengeti safari in Tanzania. Kenya has just recovered its tourist arrivals after the election violence that saw a lot of ethnic clashes which has seen the current trial of several high-profile politicians in the Hague by the International Criminal Court. Uganda's tourism is mainly boosted by the mountain gorillas in Bwindi, however in June a black-back mountain gorilla was killed by poachers and their subsequent trial led to the penalty of Shs. 50,000 which is just approximately under $18. The killing as well as the measly court ruling shows how ignorant the local community as well as the judical system is unaware of the importance of mountain gorillas to the tourism in Uganda not to mention the fact that they are critically endangered species. It is imperative that conservationists begin to once again sensitize the local populations about the importance of conservation.
